Never before had I been required to produce reports that reduced my clients to dollars and cents. Worse, I learned that they told another BCBA to exaggerate the client’s symptoms to get more hours.
Hoping the issues were limited to just this company, I took a position in another clinic. In that role we were expected to use “cookie cutter” solutions for our clients. If a client needed feeding support, there was a specific program to follow, regardless of the needs of the learner. They were creating standard operating procedures for everything to create efficiency (and increase profits) but they were missing the heart of ABA which is individualized treatment.
I left that role for a position with a non-profit, feeling that this transition aligned with my values. But after only a few months the ABA portion of the business was bought out by a for-profit company and I found myself in the same situation I had left.
Another company who invited me to work for them would only allow me to provide 1 hour of supervision for every 20 hours of RBT services (5%), in spite of the documentation they present to their staff stating the BACB recommends 20%.
Like many BCBAs I’ve talked to, I’ve seen first hand what can happen when the profits of ABA are placed ahead of the clients.
These experiences, and many like them have led me to create my own business, along with my twin sister Dianna. Together we have formed Master ABA, and developed the BCBA Business Builders program to help BCBAs who find themselves in a similar situation.
The Problem with Being a BCBA Today
ABA has it’s roots in the 1960’s. The world has changed but many ABA companies still:
- Target stereotypies, eye contact and other behaviors
- Which can actually cause harm to the individual
- All in an attempt to make the individual appear “normal.”
But that’s not the end of it—the problem’s actually worse than that!
- Clinics are being bought out by big-business as investments.
- And BCBAs are encouraged, or required, to follow unethical practices to meet unreasonable demands.
- This means clients aren’t getting the support they need, and insurance companies are denying more claims than ever.

- My passion is helping new professionals in the field avoid many of the pitfalls I experienced early on in my career and I have years of experience helping trainees reach their goals.

Will there be a recording of this challenge?
- The 5-day challenge is a recorded training, however you will only have access to the recording until January 21.
Why will I lose access at the end of the training?
- We want you to take action on what you learn in the training. The most effective way to encourage this is to give you a deadline.
Will I have access to any of the content after I no longer have access to the training?
- Access to homework assignments and select resources will continue to be available through The Balanced BCBA Dashboard.
How is the training different from a regular course?
- The training is meant to be taken over 5 days with actionable steps each day so you can immediately put what you’re learning into practice. This training puts the focus on DOING instead of just LEARNING.
Will I get a certificate of completion?
- Unfortunately this training doesn’t qualify for CEU credits and no certificate will be provided.
What will I learn during the challenge?
- You will learn the steps you need to follow to identify your ideal customer, determine a problem you can help them solve, and launch your first product.
I don’t want to start a business. Can this still work for me?
- Absolutely! We started out by selling a few products on someone else’s website. You can too! You don’t need to create a business unless you want to.
