The problem with parent training

Because parents are overwhelmed trying to meet their family’s basic needs and reinforcement for following your advice is neither immediate or certain, the reality is grim:

  • Many parents simply attend ABA parent training sessions out of obligation without actually changing what they do outside of sessions.
  • Even those that do use some of the strategies, this change is often short-lived.
  • Meaning your clients don’t receive the intended benefit of parent training.

But that’s not the end of it—the problem’s actually worse than that!

  • You spend endless hours scheduling and rescheduling parent training sessions, trying to come up with strategies that will get them to follow through.
  • Most of the parents don’t see how they can use the strategies you suggest, so it’s a waste of your time and resources to continue as you are.
  • Plus, you’re billing insurance companies for a service that’s not generally effective.

Perhaps worst of all, ABA has developed a reputation for fraudulent billing practices and having a focus on profit over client care. Insurance companies are becoming increasingly skeptical of requests for a large number of direct service hours and your clients will suffer if parents aren’t prepared to support their child’s needs if services get cut by the insurance company. This makes parent training more important than ever.

I am very impressed with your book ACHIEVE: Parent Training...(I come from a background in graphic design as well as art therapy). I may be offered a position working with young autistic children, and will highly recommend this book to the parents that I will be seeing! Thank you. You have done a beautiful job, and presented it in a very accessible way.

I absolutely loved it! I used it to help me with my final Practicum parent training for my last class in Graduate school and I shared with others the site where I got it.
Maria
I have been using the videos...they are perfect...short and well written...as you address it all from parents perspective... I had a "not-interested" dad....get on board last week!  I think too he has seen the progress of his son...which further added to his willingness to participate in parent coaching along with his wife!!!!!! Yey! thank you..
