Understanding the verbal operants gives BCBAs and RBTs a powerful framework for teaching communication based on function, not form. This distinction matters. A learner pointing to an icon, activating a speech-generating device, signing a word, or vocalizing can all serve the same function—and function is what changes lives.

What Are Verbal Operants?
Verbal operants are the functional units of language. Instead of categorizing language by grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives), Skinner categorized it by why a person communicates—the contingencies that evoke and reinforce the response.
There are six core verbal operants:
Mand – language controlled by motivation (requests)
Tact – labeling the environment
Echoic – vocal imitation
Intraverbal – conversation and answering questions
Textual – reading aloud
Transcription – writing or spelling what is heard or seen
Every operant is shaped by a different combination of antecedents and consequences. This is why two identical spoken words can represent different operants—for example:
Saying “cookie” because you want a cookie → mand
Saying “cookie” because you see a cookie → tact
Saying “cookie” because someone else just said it → echoic
Saying “cookie” because someone asked, “What do you want for dessert?” → intraverbal
Understanding these distinctions allows practitioners to run cleaner assessments, design more effective programs, and support meaningful generalization.

Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior breaks communication down into six functional units—the verbal operants. These aren’t just categories of speech. They’re the foundation for how learners use language to get needs met, describe their world, engage socially, and become independent communicators.
In ABA, identifying verbal operants allows BCBAs® and RBTs® to teach communication that is functionally meaningful, not just echoing or memorizing words. Below you’ll find a clean, table-free explanation of each operant with clear antecedents, behaviors, and natural consequences.
1. The Mand: Communication Driven by Motivation
A mand is a request. It happens because the learner wants something—a snack, a break, help, or information.
A mand occurs when:
Antecedent: The learner is motivated for a specific item, activity, or information.
Behavior: The learner communicates what they want (spoken word, sign, AAC, gesture).
Consequence: They get the specific reinforcer that motivated the response.
Examples explained without tables:
A child wants juice → says “juice” → receives juice.
A learner wants to know the schedule → asks “When is recess?” → hears the answer.
A non-speaker wants a turn → taps their AAC button for “my turn” → gets the turn.
Mands are powerful because motivation fuels learning. They create buy-in, accelerate language development, and give learners a voice early in programming.
2. The Tact: Labeling the World
A tact is a label—used when a learner experiences something through their senses and identifies it.
A tact occurs when:
Antecedent: The learner sees, hears, smells, tastes, or touches something.
Behavior: They label it (“dog,” “loud,” “sunny outside”).
Consequence: A social reinforcer—attention, acknowledgment, conversation.
Examples clarified:
Seeing a dog → saying “dog” → adult responds, “Yes, you saw a dog!”
Smelling cookies → saying “cookies!” → someone responds socially.
Seeing a sunset → signing “beautiful sunset” → listener engages.
Tacts build descriptive language, conversation skills, and social connection. Importantly, the learner is not motivated to obtain the item—they’re simply labeling their environment.
3. The Echoic: Imitation of Speech
The echoic is pure verbal imitation. It’s foundational for speech development.
An echoic occurs when:
Antecedent: Someone provides a verbal model.
Behavior: The learner repeats the sound or word exactly.
Consequence: Social reinforcement (praise, attention—not the spoken item).
Examples:
Adult says “say dog” → learner says “dog.”
Peer says “moo!” → learner says “moo!”
Teacher says a phone number → learner repeats it.
Echoics strengthen speech clarity, articulation, and sound combinations. They often appear early in ABA programming, especially for learners developing vocal language for the first time.
4. The Intraverbal: Conversation and Social Language
Intraverbals are the backbone of back-and-forth conversation. Rather than labeling something present, the learner responds to language with different language.
An intraverbal occurs when:
Antecedent: A verbal statement or question from someone else.
Behavior: The learner produces a different, related verbal response.
Consequence: Natural social reinforcement—attention, continued conversation.
Examples:
Adult says “The cow says…” → learner answers “moo.”
Peer asks “What’s your favorite movie?” → learner responds “Little Mermaid.”
Teacher asks “What comes after Monday?” → learner answers “Tuesday.”
Intraverbals allow learners to connect socially, answer questions in class, share stories, and participate meaningfully in relationships.
5. The Textual: Reading Aloud
Textual behavior is reading written words aloud or identifying written symbols.
A textual occurs when:
Antecedent: The learner sees written words.
Behavior: They read the words (point-to-point correspondence without formal similarity).
Consequence: Social reinforcement (acknowledgment, praise).
Examples:
Seeing “dog” → saying “dog.”
Reading a sentence aloud from a book.
Identifying the word “apple” on a sign.
Textual behavior develops academic literacy but still functions as verbal behavior—it’s communication under the control of written stimuli.
6. The Transcription: Writing or Spelling
Transcription is the reverse of textual—it’s writing or typing what you hear or see.
A transcription occurs when:
Antecedent: The learner hears a verbal stimulus or sees a written one.
Behavior: They write, spell, or type the corresponding words.
Consequence: Social or academic reinforcement.
Examples:
Hearing the word “dog” → writing “dog” on paper.
Seeing “apple” → writing “apple.”
Hearing a full sentence → writing it down correctly.
Transcription supports academic performance, note-taking, and written communication—critical skills for independence.
Identifying the Verbal Operant
Each verbal operant serves a different function. Responses that are topographically similar may serve different functions. For example, if a child sees a dog and says "dog" but does not want want the dog then it's a tact. If the child wants you to give him the dog (or bring the dog closer to pet the dog), that's a mand. The operants vary in their formal similarity (i.e. whether they are spoken or written) and in whether or not they have point-to-point correspondence (they match or are the same) with the SD. The Role of the Listener
In a post about verbal behavior, we would be remiss to ignore the role of the listener. According to B.F. Skinner, language is a social phenomenon that involves both the speaker and the listener. He emphasized that understanding the listener's behavior is essential for a comprehensive analysis of verbal behavior.
Skinner proposed that the listener's behavior is crucial in shaping and maintaining the speaker's verbal behavior. He argued that the listener's responses, such as attending, reinforcing, or ignoring the speaker's verbal behavior, play a significant role in the acquisition and development of language skills. The listener's behavior serves as a form of social reinforcement, influencing the speaker's subsequent verbal behavior.
Skinner further identified different types of listener behavior. These include:
Selection by Consequences: The listener's behavior is influenced by the consequences of the speaker's verbal behavior. If the listener attends to and reinforces the speaker's communication efforts, it encourages the speaker to continue using language in a particular way. For instance, if a child says "milk" and the parent responds by giving them a glass of milk, the child is more likely to use the word "milk" to request it in the future.
Listener's Discrimination: The listener's ability to discriminate and respond appropriately to different verbal stimuli is crucial. By responding selectively to specific verbal stimuli, the listener can shape the speaker's behavior. For example, a child may learn to respond differently to questions versus statements, demonstrating the listener's ability to discriminate between different types of verbal behavior.
Reinforcement of Listener Behavior: Skinner also highlighted the importance of reinforcing the listener's behavior. When the speaker's verbal behavior is reinforced by the listener's attending and appropriate responses, it strengthens the listener's behavior of attending and responding to future verbal stimuli.
